Overview

Today, you will be introduced to the ancient world of carpet making in Morocco. It is an old tradition that Berbers have passed down to generations after other. Today, the artistic tradition still expresses its cultural significance. Women, who predominantly play an essential role and weave their culture, beliefs, and emotions into carpets, have preserved it through expressing their cultures, beliefs and sometimes feelings and emotions of their own beautiful crafted in a carpet.

Itinerary

Akal tours will immerse yourself in the realm of creating your own carpet by visiting one of the renowned ateliers for weaving this timeless aesthetic beauty. We will make sure to arrive 15 minutes before the booking time. I t is in the old medina of Marrakech and the workshop is entirely run by local women.

At first, you will be greeted by the women before indulging in the process. Then, they will provide you with some techniques and skills used by the Berber women as well as the principles of weaving the best traditional carpets. Explore the meanings of some ancient symbols and patterns used in the carpets but what is more is that you will learn that each region of Morocco has a distinctive carpet such as in the famous Taznakht carpet or Bani Ouarain carpet which come from two different regions of Morocco.

Besides, you will also be given insights into the wool preparation, particularly cleaning and spinning and dying. Afterwards, you will sit and with the instructions from the women, you will learn how to weave with your own hands and if you are a beginner, they will make sure that you learn at your pace. After that, you will seize the opportunity to make some pictures and browse through the atelier for different styles of carpets from different tribes and regions of Morocco.

The workshop comes to an end with some mint tea and Moroccan pastries and a small talk with the Berber women sharing their stories. Prepare for going back to your hotel with beautiful memories as well as techniques of weaving Berber carpets.
